I photographed this Japanese crane on the island of Hokkaido in Japan. It was flying straight toward the camera, and to be honesT, I didn’t think it would be sharp because my composition was so tight with zero room for error. Fortunately, cranes are slow flying birds. That gave the autofocus mechanism a fighting chance to capture the bird with tack sharp clarity. I used AI Servo as well as a large center cluster of autofocus points. The original background showed a stand of trees that had been blown bare of snow by strong winds. I replaced that with this winter landscape that was just a few miles away from the location where I captured the crane. One of my favorite themes in nature photography is white on white. My settings for the bird in flight picture were 1/1250, f/11, and 800 ISO. I used a 500 mm f/4 Canon telephoto mounted on a tripod with a gimbal head.
