I took this photograph along the Rhine River in Germany with a telephoto lens. The focal length was 400mm, and that meant that the depth of field wasn't extensive. I could focus on the foreground church, but the castle in the background wasn't tack sharp. It was fairly sharp, but not critically so. The only way to make both subjects sharp was to use a small lens aperture, and the only way to do that and not worry about a slow shutter speed was to use a tripod. I know it's easy to grab shots and avoid the hassle of setting up a tripod, but it's worth it. Don't be lazy. Do it right and be proud of the photograph forever.
