Just before I took the sunset shot of the windmills I posted yesterday, I had turned my attention to black-headed gulls diving for anything they could catch in the canal. The water was quite still, making a perfect mirror reflection. Usually I would use a super fast shutter, but gulls are relative slow fliers and I felt I could get away with 1/500. I took this with a 500mm focal length, and my other settings were f/7.1 and 800 ISO. To hold focus on the birds, I used the eye tracking feature. Even when the birds flew toward my camera, the mechanism locked on to the subject very well. I identified the species of gull by using the free Merlin app from Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
