I photographed this southern elephant seal on South Georgia Island on my way down to Antarctica in 2010. What's remarkable about these creatures is they don't run away when approached. Instead, they hold their ground knowing this is their beach and also knowing they outweigh people by 4000 to 5000 pounds! Much to my amazement, I was able to approach this one to within a few feet and take this frame-filling shot with a 105mm focal length on a 24-105mm lens. My settings were 1/160, f/16, and 250 ISO. I would have liked complete depth of field in which the background was as sharp as the seal, but that would have only been possible with focus stacking or a composite in Photoshop. In this case, I did neither so the background is a little soft.
