I had never seen an entire herd of elephants running before, so this incredible scene in South Africa was really exciting. They were running to a waterhole. Even though the sun was shining, in order to freeze the motion I had to raise the ISO in order to shoot with a fast shutter speed. I chose 800 ISO, and that gave me 1/640th of a second. At the same time, I needed a certain amount of depth of field. I used a 100-400mm new Canon lens to make this picture, and it was set to 300mm. I figured f/10 was a decent compromise, because if I closed the lens down more either the ISO or the shutter speed would have been negatively impacted -- i.e. the shutter would have been slower or the ISO higher. This scene was very difficult to compose because every millisecond it changed. I was shooting on high speed continuous and hoped I captured something that I liked. I did.

Jim - Thank you, Ken. I love this one, too. You obviously have to go back to Africa to get some good shots of elephants. Every time you go, it's different.
