All point sources of light turn into stars when you use a small lens aperture. F/16 to f/32 produce the best types of defined star effects, and this is especially true when using wide angle lenses. In this picture, I photographed the sun behind a chunk of glacial ice on a black sand beach in Iceland with a 14mm lens. I used a lens aperture of f/32 for maximum depth of field, and I also wanted the defined star which is why I used such a small aperture. Note that when shooting into the sun with a wide angle, it has little effect on exposure when you position the sun significantly off-center like I did here. When the sun is composed near the center of the frame, it has much more of an impact on exposure.
