The wild costumes in the Jember Fashion Carnival seem, at least to me, to invite wild backgrounds that embellish and contribute to the fantasy. Photographing the costumed participants as they are seen in the parade is great, but everyone does that. For this image, I patiently selected the complex costume using the quick selection tool, the lasso tool, and the magic wand tool, and then composited it with a shot of neon lights I photographed at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta. The first day of the parade was in bright sunlight, which I didn't like, but I was determined to do something creative with them even though the lighting was harsh. My settings for the shot of the model were 1/400, f/16, and 640 ISO, and from the VIP seating area I used a 100-500mm Canon zoom. This is a fantastic focal length range to work with.
