I just spent about 35 hours traveling home from Indonesia. The best part about arriving is the greeting I get from my dogs. My cats are much more reserved, of course, but they were happy, too. I still have more pictures to post from Indonesia because there were so many great photo opportunities. This is another shot from the night parade of the Jember festival. I particularly like this one because the young woman is simply stunning, her make up is so artistic and dramatic, and the costume is over-the-top. I also like the black background, and this occurred -- even though the entire scene was illuminated -- because the light on the model was brighter than that of the background. That discrepancy in exposure resulted in a dark environment. Sometimes contrast issues associated with digital sensors work in our favor My settings were 1/200, f/6.3, and 2000 ISO. The focal length used for this composition was 300mm, the middle point of my 100-500mm Canon zoom. A lot of photographers at the carnival used a tripod, but I felt this wasn't necessary. As long as the shutter speed is fast enough, a tripod doesn't do anything for you except it takes the weight of the camera and lens off of your arms and shoulders.
