I like shooting environmental portraits with a wide angle lens. This shot of a model in Mongolia dressed as a 13th century queen shows a wonderful contrast between the ornately attired subject and the desolation so typical of this country. I used a 24mm focal length for the unique perspective and f/20 to make sure I had complete depth of field. In a picture like this -- especially a landscape shot -- you don't want shallow DOF. Because I used the wide angle lens, the model is disproportionately large compared to the background. This makes her prominent, a strong focal point, and adds drama to the composition.

Jim - Daniel,
I use this same technique for landscapes and lots of other types of subjects and it always looks great.
