These are Surma tribal girls in the Omo River Valley of Ethiopia. I used a telephoto zoom for the shot -- 100-400mm Canon -- which inherently has shallow depth of field. In a picture like this with two subjects, both have to be sharp. If one of the girls had been even slightly out of focus, I would have trashed it. There are two things you can do in a situation like this to insure both subjects are sharp. First, you can have them pose so they are equidistant to the camera and, second, use a small lens aperture. I did both, but you can see the girl on the right is 2 or 3 inches further away than her friend. That small amount of discrepancy means a less than perfect image unless the small aperture took up the slack, which it did here. My settings were 1/160, f/16, and 1000 ISO. The actually focal length was 188mm. The low angled sunset lighting created the warm colors.
