My Winter Wildlife workshop is coming up in January, and this is my favorite time to photograph North American mammals. Their coats are full and luxurious, and the wintry environment is pristine and beautiful. During the last winter workshop in Montana, I photographed this arctic fox that actually fell asleep while we were photographing him. It's hard to relate to sleeping on snow in frigid temperatures, but this guy seemed quite content. When I expose for snow -- especially white on white situations -- I don't use any exposure compensation. I let the images go a little dark to protect the highlights. I then tweak the exposure in the RAW images in post-processing until it's perfect. In this way, I never blow out highlights, and the underexposure isn't enough to cause unwanted noise. My settings were 1/250, f/8, 640 ISO, and the focal length for this image was 320mm.
