I have learned over the years of taking pictures that one of the main reasons subjects are not sharp is because the shutter speed wasn’t fast enough. For anything that moves fast, or might move fast, I now use a shutter speed faster than what I initially believe is required. For example, photographing these wolves at a kill doesn’t involve movement that’s super fast. However, animals can move like lightning, and a sudden snarl, or lunge, can be just as fast, for a very short time, as a galloping horse or a snake’s strike. Therefore, instead of using 1/400th of a second -- a very reasonable speed for sharp pictures -- I will opt for 1/1250 or even 1/2000. That guarantees that any sudden movements will be sharp. My settings for this picture were 1/1250, f/4.5, 1000 ISO.
