You can purchase online inexpensive packages of feathers, and they make great macro subjects. Feathers of many bird species are available, and sometimes you'll fill the frame with a single feather as I did in the peacock feather, above, and other times you can make attractive arrangements of several feathers as in the picture of blue jay feathers, below. If the feathers have a natural curvature to them, you should flatten them for the photography by using some kind of weight (coins, keys, etc.). This will help you maintain complete depth of field. I also recommend using a small lens aperture, and make sure the back of the camera (i.e. the plane of the digital sensor) is parallel with the plane of the feathers. The macro pictures should be sharp from edge to edge.
