I photographed these racoons at a roadside rest stop near Montreal, and the light was quite low. That forced me to use a lens aperture of f/2.8 (I was shooting with a 70-200mm telephoto) which in turn meant the depth of field was extremely shallow. The only way I could get both animals in focus, which was the ideal, was to wait for their faces to be virtually equidistant from the camera. My shutter speed was very slow -- 1/25th of a second -- due to the low light, so I also had to wait for the racoons to be basically motionless for a brief moment. I used image stabilization, but if the animals were moving it wouldn't have helped at all. I took a lot of shots hoping for the perfect instant when everything fell into place, and it only happened once. My ISO setting was 1000.

Carlton McEachern - Very nice portrait. For turkeys they sure are cute. One of my favourite wildlife preserves is between Ottawa and Montreal at Montebello Quebec. It is called Parc Omega and their website is here: http://www.parcomega.ca/en/. It is a wonderful place to shoot big game and small critters.
