One of the most bizarre as well as intriguing creatures on the planet is the sally lightfoot crab from the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador. It's easy to get a shot of these guys from a standing position, but I wanted the kind of intimate shot that can only be taken from a prone position with animals who are very close to the ground. I took this picture with film in the mid 90's before digital cameras and before articulating LCD screens. I lay on black lava so I could stare into that alien-like face. Today, it's hard to relate to a time when you had no idea how. your pictures turned out until they were developed back home. That's why exposure was so critical with film. Mistakes were simply unacceptable. My recordings were unrecorded, but they were probably 1/400, f/8, and I used Fujichrome Provia 100. The ISO was in the film's name. I remember using a 350mm lens which was the equivalent of a 200mm lens in the full frame digital format. The 6x7cm transparency was scanned by an Macon scanner.
