What makes a strong composition is beautiful or compelling graphic design, and the bottom line to successful designs are artistic lines. That’s what I’m always looking for when I look at a scene through the viewfinder. In Namibia, bold and beautiful lines are easy to find because in the Namib-Naukluft National Park there are miles and miles of the most striking sand dunes in the world. It’s like ‘S-curve City’; everywhere you point your camera, wind-blown curves of huge, orange colored dunes offer classic images. This shot was taken about an hour after sunrise when the lighting was contrasty. In my opinion, that’s what makes this shot work so well -- contrary what photographers usually want. My settings were 1/800, f/7.1, and 200 ISO, and I used a Canon 500mm f/4 lens.
