One of the things that first amazed me about the costumed participants during Carnival in Venice was many of these people woke up in the wee hours of the morning specifically to be photographed at dawn. They have to apply makeup around their eyes, and then usually they need assistance in adorning their elaborate and often very heavy costumes. Then they have to walk to San Marco Square to arrive at least 30 minutes before the street lamps are turned off. I use the 19th century lamps as part of my early morning compositions because of the light they provide and also because I like the ambience they add to the pictures. It's still quite dark, though, as you can tell from my camera settings: 1/60, f/4.5, and 5000 ISO. I used the Sigma f/1.8 14mm lens for the shot, and in post-processing I applied Topaz DeNoise AI to mitigate the noise resulting from the high ISO setting. My next Venice workshop takes place Feb. 23 - March 1.
