When I stood in front of these large boulders in Zion National Park, they looked nice but not as dramatic as you see them here. What made the difference was post-processing. With the application of various plug-ins from Nik, Topaz, Aurora, PhotoArtista, Alien Skin, and others, you can turn ordinary pictures into visually compelling works of art. However, keep one thing in mind: You have to start with an image that has a good composition and a strong graphic design. The old adage "Garbage in, garbage out" applies. The lines and design in this shot work well, and therefore I chose to work on this picture as opposed to others I took in this series that weren't as strong graphically. I used Aurora HDR Pro to create this very contrasty and moody image.
