Silhouettes make bold and dramatic images. If you have a subject with a strong graphic shape like this Amargasaurus (which is a dinsosaur model that's about 9 inches long), photograph it against a light background if possible. If that's not possible, then simply take a picture into Photoshop and select the subject with one of the selection tools, such as the magic wand tool or the pen tool. Before you do anything else, feather the edge one pixel (Select > modify > feather). This softens the edge ever so slightly so when the subject is pasted into another background, it will blend with the background elements naturally and not look like a cutout. At this point, put the color black in the foreground color box at the bottom of the tools palette. Now you need to choose the pulldown menu command Edit > fill. and in the dialog box that opens, select 'foreground color' in the submenu. Hit OK and your subject is instantly a silhouette. At this point, select the silhouette and paste it into a background that works well with the subject.
