Much of the world's greatest art has been inspired by religious belief, and this is one example. It is the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, a Serbian Orthodox Church, in Podgorica, Montenegro --one of the countries that became independent after Yugoslavia disintegrated. The entire cathedral, from floor to ceiling, is covered by ornate artwork, and it is indeed breathtaking. I shot this with a 14mm wide angle lens during a service, and I simply angled the camera upward to eliminate the worshipers. I hand held the camera because there too many people crowding the interior to use a tripod. With today's excellent cameras and the ability to use high ISO settings with reduced noise, I was able to get away with that. Happily, no one prevented me from taking pictures. My settings were 1/60, f/3.5, 1250 ISO. Because extreme wide angle lenses have so much depth of field, I didn't need a small aperture. I'm considering buying the new Sigma 14mm f/1.8 for dark interiors like this as well as photographing the night sky with shorter exposure times and lower noise.
