Happy Winter Solstice. This year December 22 is the shortest day and the longest night in the Northern Hemisphere. In the temperate regions, the days will get longer by about one minute per day. Even though the sun is fairly week and low in the sky, it's still a challenge to photograph directly into it. The best way to gauge the exposure is to take a picture of the sun, study the LCD monitor, and then tweak the exposure using the exposure compensation feature built into the camera. I took this photo in my subdivision in middle Tennessee during an ice storm two years ago.
