Highland cattle in Scotland are one of my favorite subjects here, and my photo tour group and I spent quite a bit of time looking for farms that raise this unique species. I had never been lucky enough to see babies, and today we not only were able to photograph several of them, we were also able to capture the sweet interaction between this mother and calf. The overcast light was ideal so contrast was at a minimum. I liked that the animals in this picture were on the slope of a hill so they were a bit elevated. Looking up at animals gives them greater stature. Looking down on them makes them seem diminutive and therefore less impressive. My settings were 1/500, f/7.1, 800 ISO, and I used a 100-400mm Canon zoom. I used Photoshop to clone out the yellow tags in their ears that farmers often use to identify their livestock.
