Sometimes Photoshop can be used to create an entirely new reality -- like with the recent dinosaur image I posted -- and sometimes it can be used to simply enhance an image with artistry. In this shot from my carnival in Venice workshop, the lighting was overcast and muted. So, to make the models stand out, I darkened the background and used the dodge tool to lighten the costumes. This simple technique can make all the difference. A highlighted subject stands out, and in a photograph we want the viewer's attention on the subject. My settings for this shot were 1/80, f/6.3, 200 ISO, and I used a 24-105mm lens set to 28mm.

Jim - Hi Bob, Sometimes I do, but in this case I didn't. I stayed away from the edges and that made it quick and easy.

Bob Turner - When you dodge do you create a selection of the subject you want to make lighter
