I find wide angle portraits to be very compelling. It's a different type of look, and at the same time a wide angle lens includes part of the environment which helps tell a story about the subject. In this portrait of a Himba woman from Namibia, I used a 24mm focal length inside her hut. The only lighting was from the small doorway, and in combination with the unique wide angle perspective, the lighting adds drama and visual impact to this. An on-camera flash would have destroyed the mystique of this. It was very dark, hence the need for a high ISO. My camera settings were 1/40, f/4, 2500 ISO. There is no way you can get away with such a slow shutter speed while hand holding a telephoto lens, but with a wide angle you take sharp pictures if you are steady, if you hold your breath, and if you squeeze the shutter gently.
