I photographed these horses during a photo workshop in southern France. They are the white horses of the Camargue, and we had taken them to the beach before sunrise to photograph them running in the surf. Just before that, they were grazing on a small rise in the perfect position to catch a partial silhouette against the low-angled sun. Had this been taken just a couple minutes later, they would have been complete silhouettes. Because the sun's intensity was diminished as it was largely blocked by the horizon, I was able to expose the image to capture good detail in both the horses and the sky with virtually no adjustment in exposure or contrast in post-processing. My settings were 1/400, f/5.6, and 100 ISO. I shot this with a 100-400mm Canon zoom.
