This is an example of what I refer to as 'impossible depth of field'. I photographed the leopard in Kenya with a telephoto lens, thus the distant background would have been blurred due to the shallow DOF of long lenses. Given the fact that I filled the frame with the tree and the cat, even at f/32 -- which would have been impossible to use without raising the ISO to unacceptable heights -- the background would not have been sharp since I was using a 500mm lens. Out of focus backgrounds are usually attractive and they direct all of our attention to the subject. However, this scene is much closer to what we see with our eyes. To create this composite, I used Topaz Remask 5 to select the tree and the leopard, and then I replaced the original background (which was terribly messy) with an East African landscape. Remask wasn't able to include the fine whiskers with the selection, so using the brush tool I painted them back into the cat's face. This was the first leopard I saw on my first trip to Africa, and I waited four hours for it to wake up from its nap and climb down the tree. This image looks a bit unnatural only because we are so used to seeing out of focus backgrounds when telephotos are used. But when was the last time you saw an out of focus background with your eyes? Like, never.
