Spring is here and that means butterflies and moths. This is a luna moth, native to the eastern part of North America. They are not that easy to find, but you can purchase the eggs, caterpillars, or cocoons online and have them shipped to your home -- depending on where you live. Some states have laws that prohibit transporting insects across state lines. The purpose of doing this, though, is that when the moth emerges it is fresh, without damaged wings or faded color. For the first couple of hours, it can't fly. It has to pump body fluids into the wings, and during this time you can move it to any background that's complementary. I took this picture in my kitchen using a fireplace log for the background. I used a 50mm macro lens, and the settings were 1/160, f/32, 1000 ISO.
