This is the remarkable mausoleum of Tamerlane, a 14th century Muslim conqueror who is considered one of the great military strategists of all time. Historians estimate the number of people who died as a result of Tamerlane's conquests in Central Asia are approximately 17 million, or 5% of the total world population at the time. (The same percentage of today's world population would be 388 million dead.) The mausoleum is located in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The beautiful ceiling design is square, but I used a 14mm lens and took the shot from a corner of the sumptuous interior. This created the impression the design is diamond shaped. I bought the Sigma f/1.8 14mm lens specifically for dimly lit situations like this; the large lens aperture enables me to use a fast shutter speed with a relatively low ISO when tripods are not allowed. My settings were 1/125, f/1.8, and 1250 ISO.
