This is the third portrait from my files that remains one of my all-time favorites and that I’d put in the category of ‘outrageous’. Blue is such an unusual color for a face -- animal or human -- and I find it to be visually compelling. I took this shot in Sao Paulo, Brazil during their wild and sexy carnival. Through my friend Alex Decoster, who made special arrangements, I was able to shoot intimate portraits of the participants from street level This was at night, and the large banks of mercury vapor lights that lined the parade route were the only illumination I had to work with. I experimented with various white balance settings and decided auto white balance produced the most accurate color palette. The only Photoshop work I did here was to lessen the sheen on the tip of the young woman’s nose (I did that by using the clone tool at 50% opacity). My settings were 1/800, f/5.0, and 1600 ISO. I took this with a 24-105mm lens.
