This is a stepwell in Jaiselmer, a city in the desert state of Rajasthan, India. It collects rainwater in cities where many people don't have running water in their homes. Women carry pots to the well and fill them for use in their homes. In the rainy season, the level of the water is high and the number of steps that have to be climbed is less. To make sure I was able to take a perfectly composed image, I hired models through my local guide to pose for me and my photo tour group as I directed. I learned a long time ago that I can rely on serendipity to get good shots, or I can set them up per my vision. The latter technique consistently produces the best images. My settings were 1/200, f/9, and 640 ISO, and I used a 24-105mm lens.
