During a sunrise shoot of Mt. Semeru in the Bromo Caldera on East Java, Indonesia, a huge plume of smoke rose from the top of the mountain. I shot this in 2002 before I went digital, and when this happened I had reached the end of the 20 exposure medium format roll of Fujichrome Velvia. I feverishly worked to change film, and by the time I was ready to shoot again, the column of smoke had blown to the side. The wind was fierce that morning, and the smoke moved quickly. I took this image from a tripod, and when I got home and had the film developed, I was not happy at all because I had wanted the emission to come out of the top of Semeru. After studying the image, though, I decided in the end I liked it. My settings were not recorded, but I woud have taken this wide open on a 350mm telephoto, i.e. f/5.6.
