One of my favorite shots from the Pantanal region of Brazil is this stop-action image of a jabiru stork returning to its nest to roost for the night. This is a stone's throw from one of the lodges I use, and there is a three story spiral metal staircase 30 feet from the huge stork nest that allows eye-level shots of the birds and their nesting behavior. For this picture, though, I was on the ground, anticipating the stork's return to the nest for the evening. I wanted to photograph the bird against the clean background of the sky. The sunset was beautiful -- but it was behind me and not behind the stork. So, as soon as I captured the flight shot, I turned 180 degrees and photographed the sky. I made the colorful cloud photo out of focus, typical of what you'd expect when using a long lens and focusing on the bird. My settings for the picture of the stork were 1/500, f/5.6, 640 ISO and I used a 70 -200mm lens along with a 1.4x teleconverter. This shutter speed is slower than my usual 1/3200 for birds in flight, but storks are so large and their wings flap slowly. Hence, I could get away with the slower speed.
