Komodo dragons are the largest living lizards on earth. They live on three islands in the Indonesian archipelago -- the island seen here at sunset is called Komodo Island. The dragons have a unique way of hunting. They bite an animal, like the indigenous Timor deer, and then they will spend 3 or 4 days following the animal until it dies from the toxicity of the bite. This is a composite image. I photographed the dragon on the beach and then combined it with the elevated shot of the island. More and more I'm liking everything sharp in my wildlife and nature shots as opposed to backgrounds that are completely out of focus. Sometimes a soft background works really well, but this composite image is more akin with what we see with our eyes. Remember, we never see shallow depth of field.
