A lighting technique that consistently results in great effects is so simple that you'll be amazed that you haven't tried it already. It is painting with light, and it's done with a long exposure of an object in the dark or in low light conditions. For the light source, use a small flashlight, a pen light, or some kind of light stick. You can put colored gels over the light as i did in the picture of the old truck seen here, and you'll end up with multicolored effects. With the camera on a tripod, using the smallest lens aperture available (usually f/32), you can move the light over the subject for various types of effects. Keep the flashlight moving during the long exposure so you don't get any hotspots, and you'll have to experiment with exposure times, distance of the flashlight to the subject, and any other factors that affect the image.
