Backgrounds are virutally as important as the subject. They enhance and embellish a subject, and a great background can make the shot while a bad one ruins it.
When I travel, I am always looking for beautiful and unique backgrounds to be used with other subjects. The one you see here is the elevator landing for six elevators in the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore. I photographed it with a tripod and a small aperture at 6am so other guests wouldn't be a problem. When I got home, I added a wonderful sculpture from the 1st century A.D. that was found in the Roman ruins of Ephesus in Turkey. The artwork is now in the Ephesus Museum, and it is displayed very well. However, the background is the interior of the museum with other sculptures, visitors, doorways, signs, etc. In other words, the background is boring and doesn't add to the art itself. The new background, however, makes an incredibly powerful visual statement in my opinion.
Did I envision this particular composite when I photographed the elevator landing? No, I didn't. But once I saw it on my computer, I came up with this idea. Of course, many, many other subjects could be put here as well.
