I captured this giant river otter catching a fish in the Pantanal region of Brazil. I lay down in the boat as close to the river’s surface as possible to get this low angle. I used a very fast shutter speed to freeze even the water drops, and in the relatively weak sunrise lighting, the ISO had to be high. I was using auto ISO because that allowed me to specifically choose the shutter spped as well as the lens aperture. A tree branch stuck out of the water at the far right side of the frame, and I cloned that out because it was a little distracting. I shot this handheld with a Canon 500mm plus a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm of focal length. It was an awkward and uncomfortable shooting position, but I wanted this perspective. The fast shutter also dealt with the magnified camera movement. My settings were 1/2000, f/5.6, and 3200 ISO. My next photo tour to the Pantanal is in November, 2021.

Linda Purdom - That is an amazing shot, one that should be on a magazine cover. Just amazing!!
