I never knew there were real, live teddy bears until I went to Australia. Down Under, they call them koalas, but I’m convinced they are actually teddy bears. It’s definitely the ears! How any animal can have such cute and adorable ears is a mystery of creation. What I love about this picture is the backlighting, and specifically, those improbable ears are illuminated brightly against a dark background. That contrast is what makes this shot. This kind of angled lighting only occurs when the sun is low in the sky and when the subject is backlit against a shadowy and muted background. The way the light and dark areas are distributed throughout the composition makes metering a challenge, so I consulted the screen on the back of the camera to make sure I was getting what I wanted. My settings were 1/200, f/3.5, and 400 ISO. I took this with a 70-200mm lens.
