This is a pair of mating Malay lacewing butterflies I photographed in Indonesia. I would have liked to have used f/32 for maximum depth of field, but there wasn't enough light. So, to garner the most depth of field possible, I positioned myself so the back of the camera, i.e. the plane of the digital sensor, was perfectly parallel with the plane of the butterflies' wings. In a macro shot like this, if a portion of either insect were soft, it wouldn't have been a successful image. My settings were 1/1000, f/11, and 6400 ISO. I mitigated the noise from the high ISO by applying Topaz DeNoise in post-processing. Note I used a fast shutter speed to freeze the active butterflies.
