I always wanted to photograph two knights in a foggy forest in Europe as if they were returning from the Crusades, but to set that up wasn't easy --especially the foggy forest part. When I captured this forest in dense fog in Italy several years ago, I knew I had one of the components of my previsualized idea. I then found a Renaissance Faire in Tennessee and photographed two knights resting between a mock jousting tournament. One of them was holding a broken wooden lance, and there was an audience in the background. In addition, I shot this at 3pm in bright sunlight. I darkened the image in Photoshop, eliminated the reflection of the sun in their armor, added the blue color, and then bought a sword on eBay and photographed it so I could digitally place it in the hands of one of the knights. It was very difficult to make the horses' hooves look like they were really standing on the ground in the new background -- the blue forest -- so I darkened the bottom of the frame to solve that problem. In making the precise selection around the knights and the horses, I used the pen tool.
