My wife rescued this baby northern map turtle from the jaws of our cocker spaniel, Teddy, who found it crawling on our driveway and decided it was a toy. This is the kind of turtle pet stores sell. I had never seen one in the wild. It was very small -- only about two inches in length -- and to take this frame-filling shot I used a 50mm macro lens along with two extension tubes. This much magnification causes a loss of depth of field, so I used a lens aperture of f/32 to compensate. In addition, I took this with a ring flash. Note how diffused the light appears. This is one of the characteristics of light emanating from the ring flash. I cloned out the reflections of the flash in the eyes (which were small and undesirable crescent shapes), and I added a small reflection beneath the turtle using the plugin Flood (made by flamingpear.com). My other settings were 1/160 and 100 ISO.
