To make this composite, I had to use the pen tool and work at 600% to select every hair of the horse. It took me three hours to do that, but the original shot in a corral was nothing special at all. This beautiful Gypsy Vanner horse (and the beautiful model as well) needed a sensational background, and the only way to make it look good was to make a meticulous selection of each backlit hair. Once I had the selection, pasting in a background was the easy part. As I demonstrate, often there are different kinds of backgrounds that work. Notice how I used a low angled sun over a pond for the background; this made it look real because the horse was backlit from the same kind of sunlight. The reflection of the horse's feet was created by using the Photoshop plugin, Flood (made by flamingpear.com).
