I have a few themes in my photography, and I am constantly on the lookout for opportunities to add to these collections of images. One of them is albino animals. This little guy is an albino ferret that a friend of mine owned. Not all white animals are albinos. White Bengal tigers, for example, are considered a 'genetic anomaly', meaning that if the climate in India were to change such that it became very cold, the genes for whiteness would prevail because those cats would have better camouflage in the snow. Whenever I take a portrait of either a person or animal -- and I have control -- my first choice is to photograph them in the shade. This avoids the problems of contrast, squinting eyes, blown highlights (especially with white subjects), and exposure. I took this shot with my first serious digital camera, the Canon 1Ds Mark II, with a 70-200mm lens to purposely blur the background. My settings were 1/500, f/4.5, and 250 ISO.
