One of the unique animals we had today in my frog and reptile workshop in St. Louis was this beautiful turquoise Mexican alligator lizard. It looks like a miniature dragon. I tried many times to get the tongue flicking out, but it was just too fast and my reaction time was obviously too slow. I used a Canon ring flash to capture this, and my settings were f/32, 1/200, 400 ISO, manual exposure mode, and I used the flash on ETTL which is the automatic exposure feature of the flash unit. The original background was black, and I like that stark, dramatic look. In this version, though, I replaced the black background with muted, out of focus foliage to simulate a daylight exposure in diffused light. My lens was a 50mm macro.
