I usually try and avoid harsh, midday sunlight, but in this Himba village in Namibia, I couldn't avoid it if I wanted an outdoor shot. So, I asked the young girl to face into the sun. Had the sun been overhead, like at noon, I couldn't have taken a workable shot. Or, had the girl been facing me and thus turned away from the sun for sidelighting, that also wouldn't have worked because there would have been too many black shadows. It was about 10am, and the sun was still somewhat low in the sky. This meant the front lighting could fill in some of the shadows. I took this with a 24-105mm lens set to 24mm, and shot from a very low angle to capture the girl as well as her desolate village. The f/16 lens aperture allowed me to capture complete depth of field.
