I took this portrait of an eagle hunter in Mongolia with a bright sky behind him. I had to shoot with a plus one exposure compensation so his face and his incredible coat made of fox were exposed correctly. That meant the sky was too light and devoid of detail or interest. So, I replaced the sky with a cloud pattern that made sense given the diffused ambient light. In a shot like this, it’s challenging to capture all of the elements so they are perfect. In other words, I wanted a dynamic wing position of the golden eagle, a good expression on the hunter, a nice sky, and a complimentary landscape. The original image was good, but not as good as what Photoshop allowed me to do. I even replaced the mountains because I liked the geology of this range compared to what the original background looked like. My settings for the original shot of the hunter were 1/320, f/11, and 400 ISO, and I used a 24-105mm lens.
