On my China photo tour (scheduled for Jan. 2023), I bring my group to a Siberian tiger reserve. Just like a safari in Africa, we shoot through open windows in a small bus. The last time I was there, the air temperature was minus 36 degrees. To keep cameras functioning in this kind of cold, place extra batteries in a shirt pocket so the warmth from your body ensures they will still function and, at the same time, you can rely on them to deliver a fast frame rate when needed. I captured this portrait with a 500mm focal length, and my settings were 1/500, f/11, and 640 ISO. Given the relatively close proximity of the tiger to the vehicle and the distant forest background, the long lens I used, even at f/11, completely blurred the forest in the distance. I knew the f/11 aperture would hold a certain amount of depth of field on the tiger, but it wouldn't bring into focus any of the trees on the mountain side.
