Last night my photo tour group and I were up until 12:30am light painting this beautiful scene of an old, yellow truck in front of a red barn with the backdrop of the Milky Way. It took several attempts to get it right because every time I painted the scene with my flashlight, the amount of light was different. I placed my hand over the flashlight to reduce exposure significantly because we used a high ISO for the stars. Too much light on the truck and barn would grossly overexpose them. I used a vertical composition to include as much of the sky as I could with my 16mm focal length. My settings were 20 seconds, f/2.8, 3200 ISO, and I used the new Canon16-35mm III lens. I shot this on tungsten white balance to make the sky blue, but that also made the foreground bluish as well, which I didn't like. So I made a rough selection of the truck, barn, and trees with the quick selection tool in Photoshop, feathered the selection 20 pixels, and then used the Camera Raw Filter to access the temperature slider to alter the selected area from blue to the warm colors you see here. I wore a headlamp so I could see what I was doing in the dark, and then I took it off and placed it inside the cab of the truck for some additional illumination.
