This is a mother and almost-adult cub near Churchill. There were crossing a road, and what makes this particularly successful in my opinion is the road was elevated above my shooting perspective. Any animal is given greater stature when you can photograph it from a low vantage point. I took this with a focal length of 560mm -- 400mm plus a 1.4x teleconverter -- and the settings were 1/800, f/8, and 1000 ISO. In post-processing I removed the bluish cast typical of shooting with a daylight white balance in deeply overcast conditions. Long focal length lenses inherently have shallow depth of field, so I waited until the two animals were equidistant to the camera to make sure both faces were sharp.
