Multnomah Falls

This picture has been taken by zillions of people visiting the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, but it is still one of my favorite images from the Pacific Northwest. This is Multnomah Falls, and whether you blur the falling water or freeze it so show sharp detail in the water patterns, it's a stunning sight to see and photograph. My photography tour group got here in the early morning to avoid the crowds and to make sure the falls could be photographed in diffused light. My settings for this picture were .6 seconds, f/22, 100 ISO, and I used a Canon 24-105mm lens from a tripod. I used a small aperture for two reasons: 1) to force the shutter speed to be slow to blur the water, and 2) to insure I had enough depth of field so both portions of the waterfall were in sharp focus. Even though I blurred the water, sharp focus was essential.
