Two days ago I posted a picture of a hang glider landing in front of the Dolomite range in Italy. That was the second time this serendipitous occurrence happened to me. This picture shows the first time. I had a photo tour group in Namibia, and we were photographing this spectacular dune in the late afternoon when I saw someone moving near the top. He was very small at that distance, and I wasn't sure what he was doing until he jumped off and took flight. I'm sure the pilot wasn't thinking about a few photographers on the ground, but he drifted back and forth in front of the dune in the most perfect way from our point of view. Of the series of images I took, this is my favorite because the glider is illuminated beautiful and it contrasts with the shadow in the background. That contrast, and the dramatic sidelighting, makes the shot. Plus, of course, the stunning S-curve in the sand. I shot this with a 70-200mm lens, and the settings were 1/400, f/5.0, and 200 ISO.
